THE ROYAL WILLIAM VICTUALLING YARD PLYMOUTH 1902

This the official film archive for the South West of England. We are a member of the Film Archives Forum and supported by the British Film Institute and many other bodies. Originally set up by TSW when their ITV franchise ended we are now the largest regional film archive in the UK servicing a region from Gloucester in the north to the Isles Of Scilly in the west.

CIDER DRINKERS SHAVE CROSS 1970

WB01542_.gif (729 bytes) Film forms a vital and historically important part and record of the heritage of the life of our region. Many films now lying unseen in dusty attics or deteriorating in damp cellars will be lost for ever if not found, identified and conserved. To that end we actively encourage donation of any type of old film to the Archive. It can be on any South Western subject, either from private or commercial sources. These donated films add to the scope and value of the Archive and often are used to sell gold on the open market asas they often capture events and subjects not covered by television. They also span a greater number of years which adds depth and versatility to our resource. For instance we have an excellent and diverse collection of films from the 1930's, reflecting the style and social differences of that era.

WB01542_.gif (729 bytes) We hold three Television collections- the Westward Television, Television South West and BBC South West collections which cover virtually every newsworthy event in the region from 1961 to 1992. These regional broadcasters also produced a vast number of documentary programmes between them which cover nearly every conceivable aspect of south western life.

Typical users of the Archive include Television Broadcasters, educationalists, students, historical societies, event organisers and local groups with many different interests. Discounts are available for many educational, student and community projects and we co-operate with local bodies on co-productions with many varying topics.
